Teen Volunteer Program

At Belleville Public Library, we’re pleased to support secondary school students in completing their community involvement hours. Volunteer intake takes place twice a year, in the fall and spring. Due to high demand and a limited number of volunteer positions, we’re unable to accept every student who applies.

You may also be interested in our Teen Bookish Content Creator opportunity to earn community service hours (the Content Creator program does not require training).

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • As a student volunteer, your main role will be shelf reading, which is making sure books are in the correct alphabetical and numerical order.
  • You may also be asked to prepare craft materials for children’s programs and occasionally assist staff during a Saturday program.
  • Volunteer shifts are 1 to 2 hours in length and occur during the library’s open hours Monday to Saturday (no Sunday volunteer shifts).

Steps to become Teen Volunteer

  1. Attend a 1.5-hour* group training session to learn more about volunteer tasks, meet library staff, and determine if volunteering at the library is the right fit for you.
  2. Complete a 1.5-hour* individual training session with a library staff member. The focus of this session is learning how to shelf read.
  3. Complete at least 2 shifts during a 2-month probationary period. The probationary period begins when individual training session is complete.
  4. Pass a skills assessment (see Teen Volunteer Program Guidelines for details).

*Both training sessions count toward your community service hours.

Teen Volunteer Application

We ask that teens, rather than parents or guardians, complete the application form. One of Belleville Public Library’s expectations for Teen Volunteers is the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with library staff.
Please enter a number from 9 to 12.
Volunteers must be in high school. If you are a grade 8 student, please wait to apply until you are in grade 9.
I have read Belleville Public Library Teen Volunteer Program Guidelines.*
